GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

SOUTHEASTERN ASSOCIATION OF ADVISORS
FOR THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS

President Lisa Alty convened the meeting at 8:10 AM

Welcome

President Alty welcomed the members to the meeting.

Sonya Lamb (SAAHP representative to the National Meeting Program Committee) brought a welcome from the Program Committee.

NAAHP:

President Lori Provost and Executive Director Susan Maxwell brought greetings from the NAAHP and recognized Sonya Lamb for her service representing SAAHP on the National Program Committee. They also thanked Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine for providing the Breakfast.

President Lori Provost made a request for people to get involved at regional level.

Report on 2010 NAAHP meeting:

Susan Maxwell announced that Scott Wright will be leading the planning for next National Meeting to be held in Atlanta , June 16th - 20th, 2010 at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Nominating Committee and Elections:

Anne Ewing presented the slate on behalf of the Nominating Committee comprised of her, Lisa Alty and Jean DeSaix.

A presentation was given by Dr. Paul Evans, Vice Dean and Chief Academic Officer, on the new Georgia Campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Thanks to PCOM for the presentation and sponsoring the breakfast meeting.

Introduction of New Members

President Lisa Alty asked those who were new members to introduce themselves.

Minutes

Minutes of the 2007 SAAHP general meeting in Little Rock were distributed by e-mail prior to the meeting. Minutes were approved as distributed.

Treasurer’s Report:

Treasurer Gerald Seebach presented the financial report, which was approved as distributed.  The current balance is $3,500.43 in the checking account and $31,313.67 in the savings account for a total balance of $34,814.10.  The balance on 4/15/2007 was $31,957.75. Outstanding reimbursements to officers will reduce this total. Report was accepted as presented.

Report of the Historian and Webmaster:

Historian Jim Small presented a brief oral report. He will be revising the website this year. Minutes of this meeting and PCOM presentation will be posted on the website.

Report on 2009 SAAHP meeting:

President Elect Linda Luck reported that the meeting will be in Hilton Perimeter Park South, Birmingham , Alabama - March 26th - 29th, 2009. The hotel room cost will be $119 per night and free parking!

There are great things to see in Birmingham including the Civil Rights Museum, the Zoo, Jazz Hall of Fame, Vulcan Park, etc.

Anne Ewing will in charge of Hospitality.

Amy Crews will be in charge of Program - submit ideas for the program to LLuck@UAB.edu.

Scott Wright will organize the Meet the Deans session.

Sonya Lamb will organize the Application Updates and assist with Meet the Deans.

Keith Garbutt will be in charge of registration; we are hoping to have electronic registration.

Resolutions:

The following resolution was presented by Secretary Keith Garbutt:

“Be it resolved that the Executive Committee and General Membership of SAAHP express appreciation to Laura Thompson and Richard (Dick) Reeder as they rotate off the SAAHP Executive Council as at-large members at the close of the current meeting.”

The Resolution was approved.

Old Business

Rob Cannon: Thanks to all SAAHP members who contributed to the Pre-Medical Advisors Reference Manual (PARM). He went on to explain the importance of PARM to new members.

Rob Cannon and Karen de Olivares serve on the NAAHP Communications Committee and were thanked for their service by President Alty.

Rob Cannon called for papers and ideas for The Advisor.

New Business

Discussion of Travel Grants to Regional Meetings:

President Lisa Alty presented the following Motion from the Board:

“The SAAHP will institute a trial of a travel grant program for the Birmingham, AL meeting. The maximum amount available for this program will be $2800.00.”

After brief discussion it was clarified that the intent was to provide a maximum individual award of $500 plus registration fee, and the amount suggested was expected to cover that for at least four advisors.

The Motion was approved.

The question was raised as to whether we could make tax deductible donations to fund this program? The President and Treasurer agreed to look in to it.

Announcement

David Pennington:  Baylor began a new Doctor of Physician Assistant Studies program, the first in the country.
